Living Word: Gardening and Woodcutting Ministries

Our sister church in North Winnipeg, Living Word Temple, has a vision to see people grow “with Christ, through Culture and in Community.” The Soul Sanctuary community supports them in their mission to create environments for all people to discover hope, purpose and true identity through Jesus Christ.

Last year the Living Word team started a garden and wood ministry with the purpose of providing a safe, healthy and supportive environment for women and men from all cultures where purpose, hope and healing through Jesus is offered and encouraged.

Gardening Ministry

The gardening ministry provides the opportunity to participate in all aspects of gardening just outside the city on a beautiful property. Everything from ground preparation, planting, watering, weeding, pest control, harvesting, processing, cooking and composting. This year the team plans to add chickens to this property that will reduce insects, provide fertilization, eggs and meat at the end of the season. Further, this year’s plans include adding box gardening for residents in North Winnipeg, including building garden boxes, providing soil and seeds, helping maintain, harvest and process healthy food.

Wood Ministry

The wood ministry provides the opportunity to participate in a variety of wood related projects, including: firewood log hauling, cutting, splitting and delivery, cedar post hauling, peeling and delivery, as well as a wood slab art program hosted at Living Word Temple. Titus Graham, a Living Word Temple employee and Soul Sanctuary community member is in the process of receiving his arborist degree with the intention of starting a tree removal service for residents inside Winnipeg.

Both these ministries combine work with Christian discipleship all the while connecting ministry participants with God’s beautiful creation. In order to continue the growth of these ministries, Living Word is looking for the following partners:

  • A male and female team to join the Living Word Staff full-time. Responsibilities would focus on gardening and wood ministries as well as Christian discipleship

  • Summer labourers for the ministries

  • Property within Winnipeg to establish tree removal service

  • Continued financial partnership

Steve Klassen, the founder and overseer of these projects can be contacted by email.
