All Hands Held

Watch a video about Garry Studensky's visit to Indonesia.

All Hands Held was started after Alana Fife (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and her friend Hannah
Showaker (Newville, Pennsylvania) were killed in a flash flood on Jan. 22/03.
They were standing in front of the Sekar Langit waterfalls in the mountains on the island of
Java, Indonesia. The Name "All Hands Held" came from the following. "All"
is a play on Alana's name, "Hands" is a play on Hannah's name and "Held"
represents the many hands that make the fund possible. Both girls were on a
one year missions and both were dedicated to improving the lives of
children who were less fortunate than themselves.

University Tuition

All Hands Held set up a scholarship program with Satya Wacana University in Salitiga (central Java) with a goal of providing a total of 21 full 4 year scholarships (one for every year of Alana's life). Soul Sanctuary has been a large part of this
program and very supportive from the start. We estimate it will take us
approximately 20 years to complete. Each student must maintain at least a
2.5 GPA in his / her chosen courses and of course they must qualify with
their grades from High school when starting. We budget about $2,500 per
year per student. This will pay for all tuition, lab fees, books, supplies,
internet access, medical insurance (a first for most of them), travel (most
are not from Salitiga) room and board, food, clothing, and a small
allowance.

Universary Tuition-Awarded

A separate scholarship program has been set up specifically in
Hannah's memory. Hannah was an only child and her mother (Joan) lost her
husband 2 years before Hannah. She lives in a modest rural home in
Pennsylvania. In short there is no available resources and this year we
decided to start the "Hannah Showaker memorial scholarship" "In memory of
Hannah whose life was lived to the benefit of those around her" It is at
the same University but it is for $1,000us and must be won every year. We
have no time limit and hope to continue for many years to come.

WISMA KASIH
Education Fund

The Orphanage is made up from
primarily from children that survived the religious riots on the island of
Ambon, Indonesia. These riots were in 1999 and most of the children saw
their Mothers, Fathers, Uncles, Aunts, cousins and friends killed with
machetes. A Reverend and his wife gathered as many children as they could
and fled to the Island of Java where they currently are in Mojosongo (just
outside of Solo / Surakarta, central Java). The building they live in is
crumbling and leaks badly. They get most of their food from Churches that
rotate their support and their Kitchen is a makeshift outside one complete
with rats the size of small dogs.
They immediately said education because without it the children would have no
futures. Depending on what grade the child is in the
cost ranges from $110cdn to $295cdn per child per year. We currently have
almost 40 children and next year that number will increase to
approximentaly 150 for reasons you will see in the next paragraph.

Building Fund

On last years trip (2005) we looked at the possibility of building a new orphanage
and had the plans drawn up. The orphanage itself raised $40,000us and was
able to purchase the land. Darryl Fife and his group are
currently are providing about 30% of the funding that will be required to
finnish the building. Soul has raised about half of the total we have/ will
send this year with the other half being raised in Alberta. The building is
going well and they have completed the well, poured the foundations,
erected the steel frame and are currently building the walls and installing
the windows doors etc. Once it is finished (we are targeting Nov., Dec. this year)
it will be able to accommodate 150 children. Unfortunately there is no shortage of orphans in
Indonesia and the space will be filled quickly which is why we are planning
for the increase for next years educational sponsorship program. The
children will come from a cross section of disaster areas as there are
still children in camps from the Tsunami as well as children from the
recent earthquakes in and around Yogyakarta. Once they have the building
complete we will start planning for a second storey on the building to
allow them to double the capacity to 300 children. The structure they are
currently building is designed to allow this expansion.
